The Genesis

2010 - Rik and Harry SoftWorks
After years of writing my own software for tasks as varied as Farm Management to an IT project cataloging small aircraft parts for use in restoring older airplanes, it dawned on me that perhaps a legacy of sorts...a need to have one's progeny do better than oneself would be a worthy goal; hence, the birth of Rik and Harry SoftWorks.
The Background
Our background is agronomy (agriculture). The boys are Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Rik is 13 years old and Harry is 4 (going on 1). They are sighting hounds (see things, chase but don't hunt). The Boers of South Africa bred them to walk with their cattle and run the wild game away. They are their farm dog. My history, probably more pertinent, is that after studying agriculture at McGill University, I managed a 390 acre farm of theirs until I went out on my own...rebuilding abandoned farms, restoring them to working order and then moving on, among other things.
During those long winters waiting for the maple syrup season to begin I began to tooling around with basic, Lotus 1-2-3, dBase 1-4. Once true multitasking became a reality, I moved onto OS/2, Rexx, Visual Rexx and db/2; all products associated with IBM. In 2004 it became apparent that OS/2 was outgrowing me. It was becoming a tool for large eBusiness. To replace the capabilities that I could foresee losing, I began the migration to macOSX and REALbasic. I presently use Valentina as my SQL database.
Among Other Things
Colourful Calendar would fit into this category. The goal was to duplicate my literal (as opposed to computer) desktop which in this case was to have a desktop calendar is always visible...that doesn't clutter the dock....has no menu but is available all the time without having to click to launch an app or use the dashboard object (which takes over the desktop when visible). The secondary goal was to have a less involved manner of making and saving messages. In my case iCal is a bit overkill.
